Flood Insurance and when do I need it?
Being in the Chicagoland area, we do get our fair (or unfair) amount of rainfall each year. Many homes around Niles, Skokie, Glenview, Des Plaines, Morton Grove, Northbrook, and Park Ridge have experienced or heard of someone's home being damaged by heavy rain falls. A flood in your area may cause extensive damage to your property and may cause even more if it is not remediated in a timely manner. Flood Insurance can help you cope with property loss as well as personal content losses.
How do I know if I'm in a flood zone?
Flood zone have been designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to determine areas where it will most likely flood in the event of a heavy storm or swelling of bodies of water nearby. You can search flood zone on FEMA's website.
Doesn't Home Insurance cover flood damages?
Unfortunately Flood Insurance is not covered under the Homeowner's Insurance Policy. Flood Insurance is an additional policy that will most likely be required by your mortgage company if you live in a flood zone. Being caught in a storm with water in your home can not only bring financial losses but it can also bring contaminates into your home from the outside that can be harmful if it is not taken care of immediately.
I don't live in a flood zone. Why would I need flood insurance?
Although you do not live in a flood zone, additional flood insurance can be purchased. Flood insurance is not only for high-risk areas. An electrical failure during a storm can cause sump pump failure leading to sewer and drain backup into your home. Homes with finished basements or basements full of collectible items can be at risk.
